Fishing near Kearney Cabin

An important part of any vacation is the fishing. Whether you are an avid fishermen (person) or just starting out, no vacation is complete without fishing at least a few times.

Kearney Cabin is not waterfront but there are several fishing spots nearby and the public boat launch is 350 meters from the driveway. Literally a 1 minute drive or 4 minute walk.

Myself, I like the freedom of shore fishing. I find if a lake or river is not active, I can simple pack up and head out to a new one all within a few minutes. Some days I travel a lot of ground, and thankful that I can!

So what is the fishing like? Pretty darn good. You will have to forgive me for not telling you the exact location of my fishing holes. If I did, they would likely not be very good for very long. Not to mention the locals would kill me.

There are trout in the nearby lakes, but rumor has it they are deep. Best to fish for those from a boat. There are rivers and streams with rapids nearby that are better suited to trout if that is what you are looking for. One small stream just outside Algonquin Park is known to have a pool at the bottom of the rapids that is none stop action. Most are small and not worth keeping, but if your in it for the sport and catch and release, you will love this spot (if you can find it).

I particularly like the fight when you get a beast of a northern pike on the line. They may not be the easiest to clean but if you take your time and know how to fillet them they make a good dinner. There have been some big monsters pulled out of the local lakes. Biggest one I saw I never had a chance to catch. All I saw was its profile as it took my lure and snapped my 30lbs braid without so much as a ripple on the water. Still sends shivers down my spine…

One of the most popular fish near the cabin (At least from my experience) are the Large and Small Mouth Bass. I have had significant success from the shore using jigs. Here are a few photos from a recent early morning trip.

If you want to try your luck at fishing while at the cabin, make sure you check the regulations regarding season and limits. Kearney is within Fishing Zone 15. Check Ontario Fishing Here.

If you visit Kearney Cabin and decide to go fishing, please post your pictures to our facebook page. I would love to see what you caught and you don’t even need to tell me where.
